The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
